"Craft at the Limits" Conference
Thursday-Saturday, May 31-June 2, 2007
Co-sponsored by the Getty Research Institute of Los Angeles and the
Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts
Three-day conference dedicated to examining the post-WWII American craft movement. The conference is designed to bring together craftspeople, scholars and academics studying crafts, and the general public to foster interactions between these groups that will promote craft scholarship and the appreciation of craft in culture.
CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:
Thursday, May 31

Education/Gallery Building, Maloof Foundation
The conference opens at the Maloof Foundation in Alta Loma, CA and will feature panels of craftspeople who were original attendees to the early conferences sponsored by the American Craftsmen's Council from 1957-1964 and those craftsmen featured in the seminal exhibition, Objects USA. Thursday is dedicated to letting the craftspeople speak to the assembled scholars and for the audience to have a chance to network with the craftspeople. There will be tours of Sam Maloof historic house which is now a museum. The gardens will be open for self-guided tours.

Harold M. Williams Auditorium, Getty Center
This two-day scholarly conference looks at various postwar moments when the concept of craft became particularly charged. Participants will focus on the interchanges between artists and craftspeople, examining feminism, the pastoral impulse in the 1960s and 1970s, the Abject art of the early 1990s, and the contemporary moment.

Once again the Maloof Foundation invites you to enjoy demonstrations
by Mexican artisans including Mata Ortiz potters, Oaxaca woodcarvers and
Zapotec weavers. A great way to spend post-Thanksgiving weekend with
out-of-town visitors.
Admission to the sale is free. Historic Museum Open
