Sunday, October 23, 2011

Free and open to the public
Jacobs Education Center, Maloof Foundation

The House That Sam Built exhibition now showing at The Hungtington Library's Boone Gallery is part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Art in LA: 1945-1980, a collaboration project among museums and cultural institutions across Southern California. Nationally recognized leader of the American studio furniture movement, Sam Maloof was an integral member of the art, craft, and design community that emerged in the Pomona Valley, at the eastern edge of Los Angeles County in the years following WWII. The Huntington showcases important Maloof pieces spanning more than three decades of his woodworking career accompanied by approximately 80 works by his friends and colleagues. Mr. Nelson will speak about how he gathered together works from several private and public collections to shed new light on the rich network of influences and exchanges that developed among artists and artisans living in the Pomona Valley during this dynamic period in American arts.
Mr. Nelson’s catalogue is available for $39.95 at the Maloof bookstore. 909-980-0412 |

IN WORDS AND WOOD
SAM MALOOF, BOB STOCKSDALE AND ED MOULTHROP
The Maloof Foundation is proud to join more than 60 other cultural institutions in
Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty Research Institute. Visit the official website
October 1 - January 29, 2012 Extended through Saturday, March 3, 2012
Pyramid Room, Maloof Historic Residence
Thursday and Saturday Tours at 1, 2 and 3 PM
Sundays 1 and 2:30 PM (Sunday tours end on January 29, 2012)
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 1st -- 1 to 3 PM
Guest Curator: Jason T. Busch, Carnegie Museum of Art

This exhibition of woodturnings from the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Craft’s collections was inspired by Jason Busch’s research for the Huntington’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition The House That Sam Built
(September 24, 2011 -January 28, 2012). Busch uncovered voluminous archives and well-preserved objects documenting the rich friendship shared by three seminal figures in the woodworking renaissance of the 20th century: Sam Maloof (1916-2009), Bob Stockdale (1913-2002), and Ed Moulthrop (1916-2003). While Sam Maloof earned an international reputation for his studio furniture, Stocksdale and Moulthrop focused their energies and talents on woodturning.
This exploration provides a rarely documented account of personal and professional joys and hardships shared among friends working
in parallel professions. It establishes Sam Maloof as a key player in the studio woodturning field through the inspiration and support he provided for two of its earliest advocates.

In Words and Wood may be seen as part of the Maloof historic residence tour featuring extensive collections of arts and crafts and Sam Maloof’s handmade furniture. More than 30 exquisite woodturnings by Ed Moulthrop and Bob Stocksdale, along with the recently discovered original correspondence and related documents, are on exhibit in the Pyramid Room.
Docent-led tours of the historic residence are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays at 1, 2 and 3 PM. Due to limited capacity, reservations are strongly recommended for all tours. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for students. Call 909-980-0412.
