Beyond Drought Tolerant: Winter Green, Summer Shape

Nate is a horticulturalist, holding degrees in biology, environmental sciences and landscape architecture. Winter green, summer shape is a new design style that uses plants which change with the seasonal rains of our local climate, becoming lush in the winter wet and developing bare branch shapes in the summer drought. Nate's lecture will show how selecting the right plants can add an exciting sculptural element to your summer garden.

The American Meadow Garden: Creating a Natural Alternative to the Traditional Lawn

John is the owner and founder of Greenlee Nursery. He is an internationally known horticulturalist specializing in the cultivation and study of grasses. John holds a degree in horticulture from Cal Poly Pomona. He is a familiar host on HGTV and PBS television shows. In 1992 he authored "The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses". This best-selling book is considered by many to be an indispensable reference on grasses. John's latest book, "The American Meadow Garden: Creating a Natural Alternative to the Traditional Lawn" published in late 2009, is already a must for anyone interested in alternatives to the traditional lawn.
John's lecture will show you how to use drought tolerant grasses to create an alternate landscape and how to create a wonder meadow area in your own yard.

Bob is Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona and a landscape architect. A recognized expert in the areas of native plants and water conserving garden design, Bob has receive numerous awards for his work in these areas. In 1981 Bob published a book on water conservation, "Trees and Shrubs for Dry California Landscapes". His second publication "Landscape Plants for Western Regions" received an ASLA National Merit Award in 1994. His latest book, an illustrated reference, "Landscape Plants for California Gardens", arrived in March 2010 and is already destined to be a classic.
Bob's lecture will highlight the use of native plants for water conservation and sustainability. He will illustrate these points with several of his own projects. He will cover selecting plant palettes for our Mediterranean climate zones, estimating water needs of plants, providing plants with wild life value and much more.

SAMFAC Community Outreach Committee. Through the hot months, we ask painters
using our gardens to bring plenty of water! Please check in at the Visitor Center/Foundation Bookstore before you start painting.
