Artist Larry White was Sam Maloof’s first full-time woodworker employee, hired as a college student at the age of 19. Today, more than half a century later, Larry is an accomplished master artist and sculptor, who brings his personal story and expertise to The Maloof.

This three-day, hands-on experience is limited to four participants learning first-hand from Larry how to make a Maloof-inspired bench in solid hardwood—which you can take home, give as a gift, or keep forever as an heirloom.

During 21 hours of intensive instruction over three days, Larry will share his skills and insights across a full spectrum of woodworking tools and techniques. Students will be introduced to design, pattern-making, and selection of wood. Larry then guides the process step-by-step as you learn to saw, shape, join, clamp, glue and finish.  The course covers basic set-up, safe use and calibration of the table saw, band saw, jointer/planer, router, rasp, sanders and a range of essential hand tools, materials and finishing products.  We will be using rescued sycamore lumber from Street Tree revival for this project.

This course is modeled after our extraordinary Maloof Veterans Workshop, launched in 2013, and available previously only to men and women veterans of the US military.  Now open to participants over 18 years of age with little or no previous woodworking experience, this course is a great way to jumpstart a new woodworking passion, renew and refresh existing skills, or find new inspiration for your next stage of exploration.

Tuition includes wood and materials. Drinks and snacks are also provided, but please pack a lunch for each day’s 1-hour mid-day meal break, to be enjoyed in The Maloof’s olive tree-shaded courtyard, weather permitting. A truly unforgettable way to learn.

Chisels are one of the most useful tools for woodworking. They are super simple but getting good results isn't intuitive, it requires learning how to simply exploit their strengths.

In this workshop we will focus on honing your layout and chiseling skills, a valuable skill for any woodworker. The skill building challenge is to replicate a Gottshall block using only a chisel and mallet.

This class is good for all skill levels alike as it either tests your chiseling skills or keeps them sharp.

Martin Alexander will help guide you through the process of practical layout techniques and how to make a Gottshall block using a chisel to its full potential in a step by step process.

Tools provided: Two Cherries Chisel, Combination Square, Pencil, Joinery Mallet, Clamps, and bench vice.  Tuition includes wood and materials.

Participants must be 18 years or older.
