Ideal for first-time or returning visitors with a passion for woodworking, creativity and the craft artists of contemporary California.
Enjoy an intimate, small-group exploration of the life, design vision and craft of America's most celebrated modernist woodworker. Saturday morning begins with an in-depth tour of the Maloof Historic Home where Sam and Alfreda lived with their family for nearly half a century. Considered Sam's most ambitious woodworking project, the National Register-listed home offers deep insights into Sam's unique California aesthetic and lifestyle.
Take inspiration from Sam's imaginative architecture, one-of-a-kind hand crafted doors and latches, hand-carved spiral staircase, exquisite American craft art collection, and the most complete gathering of Maloof furniture works found anywhere in the world. See how Sam's designs evolved and changed, and how an ever-widening circle of friends--fellow artists, clients and others--came to share the woodworker's journey
Following your lunch in the courtyard, step into Sam's workshop, where Larry White's rare, insider knowledge offers an unforgettable glimpse into Sam's unique woodworking techniques. Smell the sawdust and hear first hand how Sam selected the woods, tools and finishes that earned him a global reputation. Discover how a signature Maloof joint fits together, and learn from Larry how fine hardwoods are selected, cut, shaped and finished into a simple, sturdy, and beautifully sculpted heirloom chair.
To top off your day, enjoy some refreshments in the courtyard after the tour. This gives you an opportunity to stroll through the Maloof Discovery Garden, browse in the Maloof store, or join Larry and friends for afternoon refreshments and conversation. An unforgettable celebration of the Maloof Legacy!
The Maloof, like the homes of Georgia O' Keeffe, N. C. Wyeth, Wharton Esherick and others, is an American cultural treasure, and proud member of the National Trust's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios program.
