Led by artist Lauren Verdugo, the workshop will introduce participants to the materials,
tools and skills of woodworking in a furniture-making project inspired by the life and
career of California Modernist woodworker Sam Maloof (1916-2009).

The workshop is suitable for first-time woodworkers, providing 16 hours of hands-on experience in the making of a three-legged wooden stool inspired by Maloof’s own teaching of students during a 1963 trip to El Salvador arranged by the U.S. State Department.

Each participant will saw, join, shape and finish an artful stool made of solid walnut.

Verdugo is an award-winning wood artist, received her Bachelors in Applied design with an emphasis in Furniture Design and Woodworking at San Diego State University Spring 2021. She first came to The Maloof in 2012 as a volunteer while in high school, joining the Maloof Teen program that operates in collaboration with seven high schools in the Chaffey Joint High School District. Hired as an intern and later as an education assistant, Verdugo began teaching in The Maloof’s K-12 education programs in local public schools starting in 2014 and continues to work as an apprentice to Maloof Resident Artist Larry White. Verdugo’s own furniture works appeared in the 2019-20 exhibition Shaping Artists, Shaping Wood at the Ontario Museum of History and Art.

Tuition includes wood and materials. Drinks and snacks are provided, but please pack a lunch for each day’s 1-hour mid-day meal break, to be enjoyed in The Maloof’s olive tree-shaded courtyard, weather permitting. A truly unforgettable way to learn.

Participants must be 18 years or older

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.
