A Thriving Artist Community

An Online Gallery Exhibition

As part of the Historic Artists Homes and Studios (HAHS) consortium, established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Maloof is one of over forty museum institutions across the United States created in the homes of notable American artists. In Spring 2020, The Maloof Foundation hosted the touring exhibition Preserving Creative Places, which featured photographs of artists from HAHS sites such as Georgia O'Keefe, Thomas Hart Benton, Winslow Homer, Jackson Pollock, and many others.

Spotlighting Contemporary California Artists

A Thriving Artist Community was created to celebrate and share the work of contemporary California artists. This online gallery exhibition spotlights artists from the Inland Empire, featuring photographs taken in the very places where they live and work. Although their names may not be as widely known, their artful lives and creative processes are unfolding all around us.

Honoring the Maloof Legacy

Sam Maloof was an ardent supporter of regional artists, especially those from the Pomona Valley. Like Sam and Alfreda Maloof, some of the artists in this exhibition were born in the region, while others have been drawn to its natural beauty and art-friendly communities. Sam often discovered and encouraged younger, promising artists, many of whose works he collected to support their continued art-making.

This exhibition is part of The Maloof Foundation’s ongoing commitment to spotlight the role of artists in shaping California’s creative communities and economy.

Acknowledgments

We are deeply grateful to Tom and Toni Bostick for photographing the artists, and to San Bernardino Arts Connection, dA Center for the Arts, Steven Thomas, and Dee Marcellus Cole, who helped connect us with so many of the artists featured. This project would not have been possible without their support and inspiration.
