Join us at the Maloof Foundation for a welcoming four-week drawing course designed for beginners and anyone looking to strengthen their observational drawing skills. Through a hands-on, apprentice-style approach, students will learn to see the world like an artist while drawing inspiration from the unique architecture, gardens, furniture, and atmosphere of the Maloof campus.

Over four Saturdays, students will build confidence through guided exercises, demonstrations, and individualized instruction. Emphasis will be placed on developing a regular drawing practice using professional-quality materials and time-tested techniques. Each week introduces new skills while building upon previous lessons, culminating in a finished drawing that captures the spirit of the Maloof.

Students will also receive a private tour of the Historic Sam and Alfreda Maloof House, the Wood Barns, and the gardens, with an emphasis on connecting their drawing practice to the art, craft, and environment of the Maloof.

  • Week One: Seeing Shape and LineLearn to observe and draw basic shapes, proportions, and contours while exploring furniture details and architectural elements found throughout the campus.

  • Week Two: Light and ShadowDiscover how value, shading, and contrast create the illusion of form and depth. Students will work from still lifes featuring Maloof furniture and objects.

  • Week Three: Drawing NatureTake your sketchbook outdoors to draw trees, rocks, pathways, and gardens. Explore composition and learn techniques for translating natural forms into expressive drawings.

  • Week Four: Place and StoryBring together the skills developed throughout the series to create a finished drawing that reflects your personal experience of the Maloof campus and its unique character.

  • Throughout the course, students will receive personalized guidance in a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether you are completely new to drawing or returning to strengthen your foundation, this series offers an enjoyable introduction to the art of seeing and drawing.

Materials Included: A workbook/sketchbook, graphite pencils, and other drawing supplies selected to support your artistic growth throughout the series.

Please bring a sack lunch.

Artist Biography

Christine Schwandt is an artist whose creative work is rooted in close observation, thoughtful design, and the quiet discipline of making. Her educational background in drawing and ceramics continues to shape her artistic process, particularly her sensitivity to form, line, pattern, and the relationship between an object and the space surrounding it.

Christine’s drawings begin with careful looking. She is drawn to precise contours, simple forms, repeated shapes, visual rhythms, and intentional marks. Her work often explores how restraint can create beauty, clarity, and quiet strength.

For Christine, drawing is both a meditative activity and a way of paying attention. Whether studying an object, a room, a garden, or a piece of furniture, she approaches the page with curiosity and patience. Her work invites viewers to slow down, notice structure and detail, and appreciate the harmony found in simplicity.
