The Furniture of Sam Maloof: Revisiting the Retrospective

Jacobs Education Center Gallery
Twenty-five years ago, Sam Maloof’s first retrospective exhibition at the Smithsonian American Museum of Art’s Renwick Gallery gave the nation a deep overview of his remarkable career trajectory and the decades-long development of his iconic style. Beloved by American presidents, collected by major American art museums, and lived with in homes across the nation, Sam’s furniture is timeless testimony to the beauty of American craft furniture.
Today, the Maloof celebrates that groundbreaking exhibition. Through once again exhibiting selections of our permanent collection featured in the retrospective, we focus on the evolution of Sam’s style in the case of the rocking chair and Evans low-back chair.
In Revisiting the Retrospective, the Maloof adds new research about Alfreda Ward Maloof, showcases newly acquired work into our collection such as donations from Sam and Beverly Wingate Maloof’s estate, and presents a focus on Sam’s casework long noted by woodworkers for its beauty and function.
