Over the course of this extended workshop, you’ll explore how to transform an ordinary mountain scene into something extraordinary using big, bold, vibrant color. Joe will guide you step-by-step, sharing essential art principles and demonstrating key techniques that build confidence and encourage a loose, expressive style. The pace is relaxed and supportive, giving you time to experiment, develop your composition, and refine your painting across both days.

On the second day of the workshop, you will further expand your experience by stepping inside the Maloof Historic Home for a special look at selections from Sam and Alfreda Maloof’s vast art collection. This special opportunity allows you to see the artworks and objects that inspired the Maloofs’ own creative lives, offering an added layer of insight and inspiration for your painting practice.

Artists Biography

Joe A. Oakes was a curious and observant child that began drawing at age five. He’s been painting full time since 2008 and like other artists, had many previous occupations including, substitute teacher, art consultant and graphic designer. Oakes has survived cancer and the loss of a child and used these life changing events to propel his art career forward. His landscapes burn with the first brilliant seconds of sunrise and the last fiery moments of sunset. Expressing those feelings through the use of bold, vibrant highlights and shadows of violet hues is his signature. His work offers a meditative sense of calm and happiness, with a profound reverence for the mountains, canyons and valleys of the West and Southwest. Oakes holds a BFA from CSU, Fullerton and resides near Palm Springs, California.
