Seeing Red is an immersive, hands-on watercolor workshop that explores the expressive power of a single color. In this focused session, participants will learn to create a compelling monochromatic painting using a palette composed of 90% red watercolor, discovering the surprising depth and versatility possible through shifts in hue, saturation, and value.

Aleta will guide artists through essential techniques such as layering transparent washes, manipulating warm and cool reds, and creating contrast without relying on additional colors. The workshop also highlights the importance of composition—how placement, balance, and focal points become even more impactful when working with a limited palette.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will complete a finished painting and gain a deeper understanding of how to use color intentionally, boldly, and with confidence.

Please bring your own sack lunch.

Artists Biography

Aleta Jacobson is an award-winning Southern California artist whose lifelong dedication to collage, watercolor, and mixed media is rooted in a childhood steeped in creativity. Trained at Riverside City College, Citrus College, and Cal Poly Pomona—with additional study in Europe and mentorships under notable artists—she has developed a distinctive approach that blends traditional design principles with expressive materials, including her own hand-stained art tissues and found ephemera. Her work draws inspiration from nature, exploring botanical forms, landscapes, and abstractions that invite viewers to find their own connections within her imagery.

As a teacher, Aleta brings warmth, clarity, and an infectious sense of curiosity. She is committed to helping artists of all ages build both skill and confidence, whether through group classes, demonstrations, or hands-on workshops. Her belief in daily creativity, artistic community, and shared exploration aligns beautifully with the Maloof’s mission. Through her instruction, participants experience not only thoughtful technique and strong artistic foundations but also a deeper appreciation for the joy, accessibility, and connective power of making art together.
